Jesus continues in the section that began with John the Baptist's disciples' visit to. Jesus to inquire whether he is truly the 'one who is to come". Jesus highly commended John and the effectiveness of his short ministry, but then shifted to the current generation of 1st century Israel. He alluded to the religious leaders as "children' who must have things their own way. Thus they justify their rejection of both John and Jesus as being too extreme in relation to their own practices.
