Having witnessed a number of astounding miracles, the disciples are called together by Jesus for their first mission. They are first empowered with spiritual power to cast ouf demons and heal the sick. But the thrust of their mission is to preach the kingdom of God wherever people would listen and receive the messsage. They were instructed to take nothing along, instead relying upon the grace and provision of the Lord. In response, King Herod was unsettled and perplexed.
