Just as Moses was about to return to Israel's camp with the two tablets of the Covenant Law, Yahweh inform him that they have fallen into idolatry by making the golden calf. Moses advocates with the Lord to save Israel from destruction, then returns to rectify all that is going wrong at the base of Sinai. The Ten Commandments are broken as a sign to Israel that God takes this relationship breach very seriously and many die as the results of their sinful behavior.
